Everyone prefers to wish for a carefree life without any symptoms. Instead, we are annoyed by itchy, red and burning eyes that hurt extremely uncomfortably. A wide variety of causes can be behind eye pain. What you can do against burning eyes – Women’s Alphabet clears up!

Associated symptoms

As if burning eyes were not unpleasant enough, they often occur in connection with other complaints. These include, above all:

  • reddened eyes
  • increasing lacrimation
  • increased blinking
  • itching at the edges of the eyelids
  • a foreign body sensation in the eye
  • increased slime formation
  • general pain when opening the eyes

Burning eyes: Possible causes

The list of possible causes for burning eyes is endless. The reasons range from overexertion of the eyes, an allergy to a possible illness. Sometimes, however, the causes are already obvious if, for example, chlorinated water or sunscreen or shampoo has got into the eye while showering. However, the cause of burning eyes is not always clear. We have therefore listed some of the possible triggers here.

In general: If eyes itch and burn, this is often a reaction to environmental influences. If a yellowish discharge occurs in addition to the burning, an infection with bacteria or viruses is very likely.

Eye strain

Our eyes are overstrained faster than we would like. Hours of working on the computer, reading books, on the tablet or on the mobile phone damage our eyes. The reason for this is the concentrated reading and working, and the few blinks, as a result of which our eyes are very stressed and often not sufficiently moistened.

Dry eyes

Dry eyes can also be a cause of burning eyes. In this case the natural tear fluid is not sufficient to sufficiently moisten the conjunctiva and cornea of the eye. Too little production of tear fluid or an insufficient composition of tear fluid are only two possible causes for the eyes to start burning, reddening, dry and tired. Draft, dry air and tobacco smoke intensify the symptoms.

Allergies

Many of us suffer from allergies and often get burning eyes as a result. This is not only annoying, but can also be quite painful. If the symptoms occur mainly in spring or summer, you should definitely see a doctor and have an allergy test. Whether it’s pollen, grass, house dust, animal hair or food, the list of possible causes for your burning eyes is long and should be examined more closely.

Contact lenses

Environmental conditions are a particular problem for contact lens wearers. Wearing contact lenses puts a lot of strain on the eyes every day, which can lead to more burning eyes.

Conjunctivitis or corneal inflammation

Rather rare, but not to be excluded immediately, is conjunctivitis and corneal inflammation. By your burning eyes a conjunctivitis can be announced in this way, which is why it can first be considered as a cause. If it is caused by bacteria, your doctor will give you a treatment with antibiotics. Corneal inflammation can also lead to burning eyes.

Medication intake

Unfortunately, drugs often bring along side effects. A reduced production of tear fluid is a possible trigger for mainly dry, but also burning eyes. Antihypertensive drugs, painkillers and active ingredients related to vitamin A are just a few examples that can cause eye pain. If your doctor finds out that taking them causes the eye pain, he will prescribe an alternative medicine.

Diseases

Diseases such as rheumatism, diabetes or a thyroid gland disorder can promote eye wetting disorders with burning eyes as a consequence. In some cases it can also be ocular rosacea. Red, sensitive and burning eyes as well as encrusted eyelid margins are typical symptoms of this skin disease. Chronically dry eyes, inflammation of the eyelid margins due to blocked sebaceous glands or, in particularly severe cases, inflammation of the choroid are further possibilities to be considered as triggers.

What helps with burning eyes?

Burning eyes are super unpleasant, so it is all the more important that you do something about it quickly.

  • Cosmetic products such as shampoos, sun cream or similar have come into your eyes? In this case it usually helps if you rinse your burning eyes with clear water. If that doesn’t help, have someone look again at the packaging instructions, if necessary there are tips noted there.
  • For example, if dry eyes are the cause of burning eyes, eye drops are advisable because they soothe irritated eyes and regenerate the natural tear film. In this way, the eye is sufficiently moistened again and is better protected against external influences such as wind. We recommend these eye drops (Bayer Bepanthen eye drops 0,5 ml) they are well-tolerated, particularly gentle on your eyes, contain important moisturising substances such as hyaluronic acid and dexpanthenol and do not contain any colourings, fragrances or preservatives.
  • As an alternative to eye drops this eye spray (Ocuvers spray lipostamin 15 ml) is also suitable. It is unpreserved and well tolerated, has a low odour and is particularly recommended for eye burning, pollen allergy, hay fever and for contact lens wearers. Simply spray on the closed eye.
  • Allergy sufferers usually have prescription eye drops that relieve the symptoms and do not let the eyes dry out.
  • Do you spend a lot of time sitting in front of the screen for work and therefore have tired and burning eyes? Grab a cooling mask because it quickly relieves the discomfort and relaxes the eyes. Simply place it on your closed eyelids for a few minutes and repeat the process as needed.
  • Are your burning eyes not relieved even after several days,, light sensitive and the pain becomes more and more unpleasant? Visit the nearest eye doctor immediately and have your eyes examined thoroughly.
