Cut Your Own Hair: It Works Just Like at The Hairdresser

Can’t get an appointment at the hairdresser and the hair continues to grow brazenly? So you can easily cut it yourself – like a professional!

Sometimes the most necessary things are missing: no free space in your own diary. Or in the hairdresser’s. Or the monthly budget is exhausted. But what can we do if the cut is completely out of shape and the hair simply no longer lies flat? Self is the woman, is the motto then. With our tricks it works like a pro!

Cut your own hair: That is possible!

Of course, we can’t cut completely new hairstyles as well as a hairdresser can. If you want to cut a pixie from a long hair mane, you should make an appointment with the hairdresser in your own interest. But cutting tips, cutting steps and trimming bangs is from now on one of our easiest exercises.

Important: Get a good pair of scissors!

I’m afraid the scissors won’t do it. A good pair of hair scissors is a basic requirement for a clean cut. Smoothly ground professional scissors with honing are best. A fine-toothed comb and a water sprayer (otherwise used for house plants) are helpful.

Cutting broken tips

This is how you get rid of split ends: Divide a two centimetre thick strand and twist the hair tightly. Then cut off the ends of the hair that stick out with scissors. We show you in the video tutorial ‘Cutting split ends’ how it looks like. For the back of the head you probably need a little help.

Pony cutting

  • It is best to cut your fringe dry, because otherwise there is quickly the danger that – if it is cut wet – it will be too short, because such short hair pulls up quite unpredictably.
  • Stand in front of the mirror with scissors and a fine-toothed comb – make sure there is enough light.
  • Then comb the fringe down, but in such a way that the hair lies loosely on the forehead – not flattened, because this also falsifies the actual fall length.
  • To cut the hair, hold the hair loosely (!) between index and middle finger a little bit away from the forehead.
  • Use the scissors to cut into the fringe at a slight angle from below, always only a few millimetres – like tiny pointed teeth. Proceed carefully millimeter by millimeter – and look in the mirror every now and then.
  • If you want to trim a round fringe, you should first determine the point at which the fringe becomes longer towards the sides. Then set it deeper and deeper with millimetre precision.

Cut off length

Doing this all by ourselves is going to be difficult, because we simply can’t get at the hair at the back of the head. If you can get help from a friend or girlfriend, you should assume It will be easier if you cut the hair when it is wet, but then you should take into account that the hair will still pull up a bit when it is dry, depending on the hair structure. With wavy hair and curls, this can even be one to three centimetres!

There you go:

  • As usual after washing or moistening, set the parting, then comb the hair once completely with a fine-toothed comb.
  • On one side at the front, begin to separate a strand of hair about one to two centimetres wide.
  • Smooth the hair once more with the comb and then take the strand between the index and middle finger and place the scissors underneath. Now you can see how important a good pair of scissors is. Carefully cut off millimeter by millimeter. If you simply cut straight in one piece, you risk corners.
  • Continue like this, one strand at a time. Finally, compare right and left: pull the two front strands to the right and left of your face down smoothly with your fingers. Are both the same length? Congratulations. Otherwise you will have to trim a little bit more.
