DIY Lipstick: How To Make Natural Lipstick

DIY lipstick? It’s possible! Here we show you how you can make your own lipstick in your personal color of choice using only natural ingredients.

Whether for special occasions or as a daily companion – lipstick is part of the make-up routine for many women. The products they buy usually contain paraffins, silicones and artificial colors and fragrances that enter the body through the mouth and can have a harmful or allergenic effect. You can avoid this by simply making your own lipstick from natural ingredients. You can also create a lipstick with your own color. We explain how it works!

DIY Lipstick

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon shea butter (alternative: avocado butter)
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax
  • 1 teaspoon of almond oil
  • Color Pigments
  • As desired: essential oil (e.g. rose oil or lavender oil, make sure that it is suitable for consumption)
  • As required: Vitamin E

Info Color Pigments: You need about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoonfuls of color pigments – depending on whether you want to have a soft or a strong color tone, you use more or less. Natural color pigments are obtained, for example, from pure cocoa (brown shade), beetroot powder for red, raspberry powder for pink, hibiscus flower powder for reddish brown. You can also mix color pigments to create your own individual shades.

Tip: Make sure the ingredients are of organic quality. This way you can make sure that no pesticides or the like are contained.

Utensils

  • Crucible for storage (sterile); alternatively empty lipstick tubes
  • Small heat resistant bowl
  • Pot for the water bath
  • Spoons
  • Little whisk
  • Knives

Instructions

  1. Put the beeswax in a heat-resistant bowl and melt it in a water bath.
  2. Add the shea butter and almond oil. Stir the ingredients well while they melt.
  3. Take the bowl out of the bain-marie (attention, hot!) and stir in the natural pigments. Stir everything well with a whisk until you like the colour and you get a homogeneous mass. If you do not like the colour yet, you can melt the mass again and stir in more pigments.
  4. If you like, you can add a few drops of essential oil very sparingly. This ensures a pleasant scent. Make sure that you do not stir in this ingredient until the mass has cooled down a bit: essential oils should ideally not be heated.
  5. You can also stir in a few drops of vitamin E, which makes the lipstick last longer.
  6. Pour the mixture into a small jar or clean lipstick tubes and let everything cool down well.
  7. It is possible that the colour pigments will sink slightly. In this case, remove the top layer of the mixture with a knife.

Advantages

  • You know exactly what ingredients are in that lipstick.
  • You can generate an individual color tone.
  • You get a lipstick without chemical ingredients, which is animal-free and even vegan.
  • Inexpensive: Once you have the basic ingredients, you can quickly make more lipsticks in different colours for little money.
  • Small expenditure of time
