How to Cut Your Own Bangs at Home

Cutting the bangs yourself is no problem with a few tricks! Here we explain how to do it and also have some expert tips ready.

We love hairstyles with bangs! The bangs frame our face wonderfully and conjure up soft transitions. But before you know it, it blocks the view again! But that doesn’t mean that you have to run to the hairdresser all the time, because with these tips you can simply cut your bangs yourself:

Recutting with system

Straight bangs

  1. So that the fringe is not shorter than planned, the hair should be combed, but not flat on the head. It is best to shake the fringe with your fingers in “fall position” and pin the sides with clamps.
  2. To cut, hold the hair loosely (!) between the index finger and middle finger slightly away from the forehead (the distance also protects the eyelashes from accidental clipping).
  3. Now cut into the fringe with the scissors at a slight angle from below, always only a few millimetres – like tiny, pointed teeth. Check again and again in the mirror to see if the length of the hair still fits: So that not too many hairs are gone at once, you should orientate yourself at the lower edge of the eyebrows.
  4. At the end you can adjust individual protruding hair tips.

Fringed bangs

If you would like to cut a fringed bangs by yourself, first of all you have to proceed like with a straight bangs.

Then you make small incisions every 0.5 centimetres in the bangs to create fringes. Alternatively, you can also find special fringe or thinning scissors in drugstores, which are suitable for a stylish fringe bangs.

Special case: XXL-Bangs

You know how it goes back and forth. First it was there, the bangs, then it was supposed to grow out, and now, halfway up, you want it back… With a bit of tact and cutting experience you can cut the long bangs to the right length again:

  1. Start from the highest point of the head and comb the ex and now XXL bangs forward to the face.
  2. Then put the sides back.
  3. Shorten the divided part first to the root of the nose. Afterwards the finishing touches to the bangs follow.

Cutting bangs: The right time

You should cut your bangs the day you wash your hair. Do not start cutting your bangs right after, but in the evening, for example. It is best to wait a few hours between the hair wash and the cut. Only then will the hair fall naturally and the fringe is easy to cut.

It all depends on the right scissors

“For the bangs, a very simple one will do, and they start at about 20 euros. It doesn’t have to be a professional, because they cost at least four times as much,” says Martin Max, master hairdresser from Hamburg. “I would absolutely advise against experiments with paper or household scissors. They push the hair in front of them while cutting. The danger is too great that you cut away more hair than you want and the result will be crooked and crooked.

Tips for the perfect bangs

  • A hairy point in the do-it-yourself bangs cut are the harmonious transitions from the bangs to the sides. Therefore do not cut too far beyond the outer corners of the eyes on your own. If the face is not sufficiently framed by the hair, the proportions look “wrong” and wide faces, for example, look even more full.
  • The sides of the bangs should be slightly longer: This creates a nice natural frame instead of a square shape.
  • Do not cut your bangs while your hair is still wet. After drying, the hair will pull together a bit and the bangs may be too short.
  • Avoid a bangs that are too compact and end just above the eyebrows – this can quickly create a childish impression.
  • It is best to correct the length every few days instead of waiting four weeks to make it really worthwhile.

When should I have my bangs cut at the hairdresser?

If you don’t have a fringe (also known as a bangs) yet, you should definitely have the first basic cut made by an expert, because advice on proportions and hair texture is essential. “A deep forehead, for example, cannot tolerate a fringe with a side parting, and bangs with lots of curls doesn’t look right at all,” says Martin Max. Most good hairdressers offer their customers a free service to trim their bangs – just in case they don’t dare to use scissors themselves.
