Onion Juice: How to Make Cough Syrup Yourself

Onion juice is a natural household remedy that puts a stop to coughing! Onions and sugar can easily be made into a cough syrup that has no harmful side effects. Find out how it works here!

Onion Juice: Recipe

  • 2 onions
  • Sugar (organic)

Preparation

  1. Peel the onion and cut it into very small pieces.
  2. Fill a layer of onion pieces in a screw glass and sprinkle them with a layer of sugar. Continue in this way alternately until the glass is full.
  3. Place the glass in a cool place for several hours or all night.
  4. After a while, fluid settles, which is very healthy and can be used as a cough syrup. You can strain the liquid through a tea strainer or coffee filter.
  5. Then you should take the homemade cough syrup on a spoon several times a day. Do not leave the juice in a warm place, otherwise it will start to ferment. It is best to store it in a lockable container in the refrigerator after straining and use it up within the next few days.

Tip: You can use both white and red onions. Red onions release juice more quickly and have a milder taste. Brown sugar is best for sugar: it is healthier than white sugar. Alternatively, you can also use 3 tablespoons of honey. Honey has an additional anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect.

Onion Juice: Effect

  • Onion juice kills germs, has an antimicrobial effect and also calms the bronchi. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and generally helps to relieve the irritation of the cough.
  • The essential oils contained in the onion liquefy the secretion on the mucous membranes and therefore help with expectoration.
  • In addition, onions have healthy flavonoids, vitamin C, trace elements and minerals.

Onion Juice: Application

  • Contrary to what you might think, the juice tastes sweet and syrupy and not at all like raw onion! So it’s no problem to let it work in your mouth for a while – that’s when its effects unfold best.
  • Children and adults can take a tablespoon of the homemade onion juice even every hour. Toddlers and babies should only be given one teaspoon instead of a tablespoon.

When Should I not Take Onion Juice?

  • The household remedy should not be taken if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • The juice produced by 50 g onions can be consumed over a longer period of time without hesitation. However, no higher dose should be taken over a period of several months, as the substance diphenylamine contained in it could otherwise cause damage to the kidneys.

What are the Possible Side Effects?

The onion juice can irritate the nose and eyes and also cause allergic reactions of the skin. Other side effects may occur: flatulence, altered smell of the skin and breath and irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.

Important Notes!

  • Onion juice prepared with honey is only suitable for children over one year old!
  • If you have a cough or a cold you should generally always drink a lot!
  • If the symptoms do not subside after one week, a visit to the doctor is advisable. If babies cough, you should consult a pediatrician immediately!
