The 5 Most Common Makeup Mistakes Made by Women Over 40

Many women don’t take full advantage of the potential of makeup. These are the mistakes that women over 40 make most often when applying makeup…

Have you seen any women over 40 in makeup ads lately? If so, how often? You’re bound to notice it now, at the latest: Women over 40 are integrated far too little into the advertising of major brands.

Make-up artist Elise Marquam Jahns specializes in make-up for precisely this age group among women and is outraged by this fact. She notices from her female customers that many have not changed their make-up habits, which they acquired several decades ago, since then. But mature skin needs not only its own care, but also special make-up products and techniques.

These are the most common makeup mistakes of women over 40

1. Using blush incorrectly

Apart from the fact that skin color can change over time and you should therefore adapt your blush to this new skin tone, many women also apply the blush in the wrong place. It is advisable to use creme blush and not to apply it to the “apple cheeks”, i.e. in the front, but rather a little further back and on top of the cheekbones. This visually tightens the face.

2. Eyebrows forgotten

Full eyebrows give the face more definition. Since the hair may become sparser with advancing age, it is particularly important to fill them out with a suitable eyebrow product. The focus here should be on the back of the brow.

3. Choosing wrong lipsticks

Even though matte lipsticks are very trendy, they are not necessarily the best choice for women over 40. Glossy, colored shades are much more flattering, as they create more fullness and freshness. Matte and nude lipsticks visually age the wearer.

4. Make up the eyelids as before

Over time, the eye area changes and the skin becomes a little flabby. Here, too, make-up can visually open the eyes: Apply a light color on the eyelid and under the eyebrow. Darker shades should be set high enough so that they still show up well even with drooping eyelids. In addition, the way you apply the eyeshadows is also important: instead of wiping from the inside out, it’s better to make circular motions so that all areas are caught.

5. Omitting eyeliner

Many women say goodbye to eyeliner over time – unfortunately! This can, properly applied, wonderfully enlarge and open the eye. If an exact line is difficult, you can also use a beveled small brush and apply the eyeliner color on it. Or, with the help of a cotton swab, you can intentionally smudge the line a bit to create a natural look. Creamy textures are suitable for this. Moreover, brown tones look best on women over 40, as they look particularly natural and soft.
