10 Tips to Take Care of Your Colored Hair

Whether platinum blonde, hazelnut or copper red: colored hair needs special care. With these 10 tips, hair colors will stay beautiful and radiant for a long time.

A new hair color is like a new life: As soon as we come from the hairdresser, we are already pushed in our self-confidence and we practically shine with our new hair color. In order for the coloration not to lose its shine and luminosity, the hair needs special care. With these 10 tips and the right products, you will enjoy your new hair color for a long time.

1. Do not wash too often

In order to enjoy the fresh-from-the-hairdresser feeling as long as possible, you should firstly not wash your hair immediately after visiting the salon and secondly, you should generally not wash your hair too often. Why? The color pigments still have to settle in the hair structure – and this happens up to 48 hours after the color treatment. If you wash too early and too often, you risk the hair fibers swelling and the color molecules escaping. Be sure to use a shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. This seals the coloration. A pre-wash primer also protects colored hair from fading. Also important: Do not wash too hot! This puts even more strain on color-treated hair and makes it dull and brittle.

2. Intensive care

Dyed hair needs intensive care, because during the color treatment the structure can be damaged. A conditioner after the hair wash is an absolute must and closes the cuticle layer. Treat your hair at least once a week. Of course you can also do the hair treatment yourself. 😉 This provides the damaged hair structure with sufficient moisture. By the way: The healthier your hair is, the more beautiful the next color result will be – sounds good, doesn’t it?

3. Do not rub!

You are in a super hurry in the morning and want to shorten the drying time by blow-drying? Then you should never rub colored hair dry with a towel! This will only roughen the hair structure and the new color will be completely matt. It is better to press out gently with a towel.

4. Luminosity amplifier

The hair color fades, but it still takes a while until the next visit to the hairdresser? Shampoos, conditioners or masks with color pigments refresh the color and provide intensive care. But also color-sealing treatments at the hairdresser or top coats give great shine.

5. Beat the heat!

It is better to avoid hair dryer, straightening iron and curling iron. Styling tools put even more strain on colored hair and remove moisture from it. Try to let your hair air dry more often. Otherwise do not forget the heat protection spray!

6. UV protection

Sun protection for your hair should also be on your beauty shelf – not just sunscreen for your skin. Otherwise, UVA and UVB rays penetrate deeply into the hair and not only bleach the color pigments, but also attack the structure. Protection is provided by sprays or oils with UV filters that are applied while sunbathing and protect against drying out. If you want to be on the safe side, arm yourself with a hat or a pretty scarf.

7. No silicone

Whether shampoo, conditioner or hair conditioner – do not use products with silicones. Although the hair feels beautifully silky, in the long run silicones have an undesirable side effect: they ensure that airborne impurities settle faster in the hair and make the coloration look duller.

8. Correct brushing and combing

Be gentle with your mane. Rough combing or brushing attacks the cuticle layer and the color pigments can escape. Work your way slowly from bottom to top with a coarse-pronged comb or a paddle brush with natural bristles without tweaking. Thanks to conditioner and leave-in spray the hair can also be untangled very easily.

9. Caution with salt and chlorine water

As refreshing as the jump into the cool water may be, salt and chlorine water mean pure stress for the hair. They not only attack the hair surface, but can also change the color. Especially blondes have to be careful: The algae killer contained in the chlorinated water is enriched with copper compounds that can stick to the hair and cause it to turn green. A color-correcting care product promises help, which neutralizes the green tint thanks to violet pigments.

10. Cut the tips

The ends of the hair are the oldest and therefore most prone to split ends. If these are porous, the color pigments accumulate here particularly intensively. Therefore: depending on the length of your hair, have your hair cut every four to twelve weeks. This prevents unsightly color gradients and colored hair is given brilliance.
