7 Tips Against Tired & Dry Eyes In The Office

Working constantly at the screen can become a great burden on our eyes. We give you 7 tips against tired and dry eyes in the office!

1. Observe 20-20-20 rule

Do you know the 20-20-20 rule? No? Then it’s about time! It says that we should look up from our screens every 20 minutes and let the eye wander to a distance of over 20 meters. For at least 20 seconds. By the way, a modification of the original rule is: move away from your workplace 20 metres every 20 minutes – for at least 20 seconds.

2. Correctly illuminate the workplace

Is your office equipped with neon lights? If that is the case, you should definitely take that up with your superiors. Because: Neon light has a high colour component, which can lead to overexertion of your visual organ. Ideal is a light with orange and red components as well as white halogen light. In the best case the office is flooded with daylight.

3. Ventilation is a must

Regular ventilation is an absolute must in the office – even in the cold season. Radiators and air conditioning systems manipulate the natural humidity, so that it is often too low. The result can be dry eyes. It is best to ventilate rooms for a few minutes every three to four hours to allow the air to circulate.

4. Drink a lot

Anyone suffering from dry eyes should make sure to drink regularly and plenty of fluids. Recommended is at least 1.5 litres of water or unsweetened tea daily. It is best to always place a bottle of water on the desk, as this promotes the formation of tear fluid.

5. Use artificial tears

You can counteract permanently dry eyes with artificial tears. When choosing the preparation, however, you should make sure that the eye drops come from a pharmacy and do not contain any preservatives. The artificial liquid should cover the eye like a protective film and protect your eyes from drying out.

6. Optimize screen

An ergonomic workplace is crucial for your health. Is the screen far enough away from your eyes? Is the screen at the right height? Are there reflections on your monitor? Things you need to pay attention to. Reflections, for example, cause your eyes to strain.

7. Blink and compress

It is recommended to take a short break every 1.5 hours and to blink frequently. This ensures that the tear glands produce more secretion again. And warm compresses can also counteract tired and inflamed eyes. But beware: it is better not to fall asleep while doing this, after all you are still at work.
