Has the pony got too long? The tips have to be cut again? Or do you just feel like trying your hand at a new hairstyle? If the next visit to the hairdresser has to wait a while, why not try it yourself. But be careful! What you need at least as well as a little sure instinct are good hair cutting scissors.

Which hair cutting scissors are suitable for home use?

You may know it from a professional: Depending on how complex your haircut is, it can happen that the hairdresser uses different scissors while cutting. This is due to the fact that there are also many different types of hairdressing scissors. But don’t worry – you don’t have to buy a huge repertoire of hair cutting scissors for household use. As a rule, “normal” hairdressing scissors with micro-serration, possibly in combination with thinning scissors, should be sufficient for you. So-called slicing and modeling scissors can be confidently reserved for specialists.

These hairdressing scissors are recommended

The hairdressing scissors with micro-serration are also the most common scissors in the salon. The two main features of this type of scissors are, on the one hand, their sharpness and, on the other hand, the tiny notches. These should ensure that the hair does not slip on the cutting edges and that a precise cut is possible. This type of hairdressing scissors is therefore ideal for private use. Regardless of whether you want to create lace or pony sheaths or a completely new hairstyle – with this model you can be sure of getting it done with a little tact and patience.

In addition to the above-mentioned hair cutting scissors, thinning scissors are also suitable for laypeople. This is mainly used to thin out excessively thick and heavy hair and to give the hairstyle a little lightness. If that is your concern, we can recommend such thinning scissors to you with a clear conscience. How exactly you use thinning scissors, we have helpful step-by-step instructions for you below in the text.

Tip: Many shops, such as Otto, offer a set consisting of the two common hairdressing scissors. Handy if you plan to buy a combination of hairdressing scissors with micro-serration and thinning scissors anyway.

As a layperson, you should avoid these hair cutting scissors

We would not recommend slicing scissors – unless you are already very experienced in cutting your hair or discover a new talent in you. The elimination of the micro-toothing makes the scissors very smooth. The likelihood that your hair will slip during cutting and not be cut exactly is significantly increased here. “Hobby hairdressers” run the risk of visibly unclean work with such slicing scissors. Especially since these hair cutting scissors are mostly used by professionals for a slice cut. This does not work through the usual opening and closing of the cutting edges. Rather, the opened scissors are pulled through the hair. A technique that it is better not to practice on yourself.

We’d rather leave modeling scissors to the hairdressers. In principle, these work in a similar way to thinning hair cutting scissors, but they remove significantly more hair. It can quickly happen to an inexperienced person that too much hair is cut off.

By the way: Similar to conventional craft or kitchen scissors, there are also special models for hair cutting scissors for left-handers – with an appropriate alignment and arrangement for easy use.

Good hair cutting scissors don’t have to be expensive

It is hard to believe for outsiders, but: A good pair of hair cutting scissors for professionals can cost several hundred euros. But since the frequency of their use in the home “hairdressing salon” is not nearly as high as with a professional device, one can be satisfied with a cheaper model here. The main thing is anyway: please do not cut your hair with conventional scissors. You wouldn’t be happy with that. On the contrary. They’re more likely to damage your hair than help it. Anyone who wants to trim their tips, for example, would do them a disservice with normal scissors. Hairdressing scissors are much sharper and have a different cut.

What do you have to look out for when buying?

As mentioned earlier, good hairdressing scissors for your home don’t have to be expensive. However, there are a few points to look out for when making a purchase. After all, you don’t want to damage your hair or be able to work well with the scissors.

  • The scissors should generally be made of stainless steel.
  • Hair cutting scissors are available in different sizes. Typically, it should be five to six inches (12.7 to 15.2 centimeters). However, if you have particularly small or large hands, it is better to look again for a different size. This ensures that the hairdressing scissors are optimally in your hand and that you can handle them easily.
  • Different models have so-called inner finger rings. These allow you to enlarge the eyes of the handles if necessary. Not a bad feature!

Where can you buy good hairdressing scissors?

Basically, you can buy hairdressing scissors in pretty much every drugstore. At the moment, however, you will most likely be reaching into an empty shelf. Once again, online trading saves us here. Amazon or other online shops such as Otto or Flaconi also offer a much larger selection of different models and price ranges. So you can find the right hairdressing scissors for your needs in a relaxed manner.

Thinning scissors – A good complement?

People who tend to have fine or thin hair will downright curse others when they complain about hair that is too thick, too heavy, or simply too much. However, these can also lead to problems. If you are familiar with one of the latter cases and want to put a stop to it, so-called thinning scissors are a good choice. You probably know them from your visits to the hairdresser. These hair clippers are used to thin the hair and take away a little of the heaviness. This also works very relaxed at home.

Thinning out – this is how it works:

  • First, comb your hair thoroughly.
  • Divide your hair into individual sections three to four centimeters thick.
  • Put your thinning scissors (caution, be sure to use double-sided scissors!) At about half the length. However, be careful not to start too close to the hairline, otherwise individual hairs could become too short and stick out unsightly.)
  • Now gradually go up to the ends of your hair and cut again every few inches. How often and at what intervals you apply the scissors per strand, you have to decide based on your hair and your ideas. This technique makes the hair thinner towards the tips – how thin is up to you.
