Nasal spray helps us with colds and a blocked nose. How you can make nasal spray yourself and what advantages it has, you can find out here.

Make your own nasal spray: Introduction

Nasal spray is one of the most useful aids for colds with a blocked nose. The following reasons suggest that you should simply make your own nasal spray:

  • Full control over the ingredients: Available nasal sprays often contain the active ingredient xylometazoline hydrochloride, which, if taken regularly, can cause addiction
  • No environmentally harmful packaging
  • Save money
  • Foolproof instructions

You can also buy sea salt nasal sprays without synthetic additives. These are well tolerated and free of side effects. But the production of a nasal spray is child’s play.

Make your own nasal spray: Ingredients

Homemade nasal sprays are isotonic saline solutions that can be made from table salt or sea salt. Saline solutions are known in the medical context as sodium chloride and contain 0.9 percent common salt.

  • 0.9 grams of table salt or sea salt (without fluoride, non-iodized)
  • 100 ml distilled water
  • Measuring spoon or balance
  • Sterile spray bottle
  • Sodium bicarbonate (optional, increases the pH value, which improves the sensation when spraying)
  • 1 drop of essential oil (optional, for an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect)

The ratio of 0.9 grams of sea salt and 100 ml of water gives you an isotonic mixture that has the same osmotic pressure as our human cells.

To weigh it, you’ll need a precision balance. You can also use a normal kitchen scale and mix nine grams of salt with one litre of water. But then you have to throw away the superfluous part.

If you often have a very congested nose, you can use twice the salt content. This allows the mucus to become more fluid and flow away. For children, however, an isotonic mixture should be used.

Make your own nasal spray: Production

  1. Wash your hands and the necessary materials well before you start the production.
  2. Pour the specified quantities of water and sea salt (table salt) into a container and stir the mixture until the salt is completely dissolved.
  3. Now you put the part you intend to use into the spray bottle. Optionally you can add a drop of essential oil at this point.
  4. You can use the spray immediately. After two days in the fridge you should have used it up, as it loses its effect afterwards. Especially if the solution is already cloudy, you should pour it away or warm it up and use it for inhalation.
