Tomato Diet: Lose Weight with The Super Vegetables

With the tomato diet, several kilos should fall in just a few days. We explain the concept and reveal whether you can actually lose weight permanently with this diet form.

Whether in salad, filled with couscous or sliced on bread: tomatoes are extremely versatile and are certainly one of the most popular vegetables in USA. But is it possible to lose weight with this evergreen? The tomato diet is supposed to make this possible!

What is the tomato diet?

The tomato diet is one of the classic mono diets (see also: rice diet), through which you can lose up to three kilos in four days. Depending on the severity of the diet, tomatoes are almost exclusively on the dietary plan – which makes it very one-sided. It should not be carried out for longer than a few days.

Why is the tomato so healthy?

There are many good reasons to rely on tomatoes for weight loss:

  • 100 grams contain only about 17 calories (kcal). For comparison: The same amount of apples already comes to 52 kcal!
  • Tomatoes contain the plant substance lycopene. Lycopene reduces the breakdown of collagen – this prevents cellulite
  • They consist of 90 percent water, but at the same time are very satiating
  • Tomatoes contain up to one percent potassium, which promotes water balance and is said to help flush toxins from the body
  • Tomatoes hardly raise the blood sugar level, which prevents ravenous attacks
  • Small cherry tomatoes are also suitable as a healthy snack in between

Can I lose weight permanently with the tomato diet?

Three kilos in just four days is a very ambitious goal – to achieve this, the three daily meals should consist exclusively of tomatoes, i.e. tomato juice and tomato soup. If you eat like this, you’ll probably lose a little weight, but you’ll probably be sick of tomatoes by the second day.

Recipes to vary

In the softer version of this diet, you also eat mainly tomatoes, but you can combine it with other foods – for example, you could eat a vegetable casserole with tomatoes, mushrooms and zucchini.

Look out, Yo-Yo!

A monodietal diet always carries the great danger of the yo-yo effect. As soon as you stop the diet and start eating normally again, the lost pounds will unfortunately come back faster than you would like. That’s why the tomato diet is only suitable if you want to lose a little weight in the shortest possible time, for example because you’re going on holiday and your bikini figure isn’t the way you want it to be (our weight loss tips could also help you with this).
