Where does Ylang Ylang come from?

Ylang ylang oil is extracted from the flowers of the ylang ylang tree. Originally it comes from Indonesia and the Philippines, but is also cultivated in other places such as Madagascar.

Ylang Ylang: The effect

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) is especially well known for its extraordinary and captivating scent. No wonder that perfumers discovered Ylang-Ylang for themselves as early as the 19th century! In the Asian region it is also widely used as a remedy. The essential oil has an antispasmodic and relaxing effect, and the scent also stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are also known as happiness hormones in the vernacular, as they have a pain-relieving and calming effect. Serotonin is also known as a feel-good hormone because it brightens the mood, is anti-depressive and motivational. We know serotonin mainly from eating chocolate, as this also increases the production of serotonin in the brain. Ylang-ylang is also considered an aphrodisiac.

Ylang Ylang: Application of the essential oil

Ylang ylang in a perfume or as a room fragrance radiates its very own charm. Because of its odeur and skin-caring properties, ylang-ylang is also a popular ingredient in natural cosmetics such as creams and soaps. But the essential oil can also be used for other applications and complaints:

  • Menstrual cramps: The oil of the ylang ylang tree can have an antispasmodic effect, which is why it is often used by women for menstrual problems and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
  • Stress: The scent of Ylang-Ylang has a balancing and relaxing effect that reduces stress and tension.
  • Sleeping problems: Because of its relaxing effect and the stimulation of the feel-good hormone serotonin, it can help to promote sleep!
  • Skin care: Ylang ylang has antibacterial properties and can be used for example in foot and nail care. The oil is also said to help with impure skin.
