15 Tricks to Make Your Bedroom More Comfortable

Your bedroom should be the most comfortable place in your apartment – after all, you spend a third of the day in it! Here are 15 tricks how to make your bedroom even more comfortable.

We spend about a third of the day at work. One third of the day is spent on the way to work, shopping, meeting friends, watching TV. We spend the last third in the bedroom. Therefore it is the most important room in our apartment. Here we refill our energy reserves. This is where we dream. Here we have the most intimate conversations with our partner.

All very good reasons why we should deliberately furnish the bedroom in a cosy way! Here we want to create an oasis of happiness, a refuge from all stress. A small peaceful world on its own.

1. Bedroom more comfortable with candlelight

Flickering fire creates a feeling of security and warmth. Ideal for making a room look cosy. A few candles spread around the room can work wonders!

Whether single tea lights, thick standing candles or floating candles – the market offers a variety of possibilities to put your bedroom in the right light.

2. Make bedroom more comfortable with sitting area

A table and chairs with upholstered seats by the window (or in a corner) immediately make the room look more inviting. If you have enough space, you can also place a small couch in the bedroom. Every seat makes a room more homely (by the way, this also applies to large corridors!).

The quiet island can be used as a reading corner, for writing a diary in the evening or for sleepless nights, when you just look out of the window and let your thoughts run free…

3. A shelf behind the bed

A – at best wooden – shelf behind the bed, makes the sleeping place much more homely. Whether you decorate it with candles or with photos of your loved one is of course up to you. Even small bed lamps and books can be placed on it.

The shelf creates a distance to the cool wall and makes the room look more comfortable. For that extra cuddly kick, small decorative cushions can also be placed on the shelf.

4. Pictures

Photos and pictures on bare walls make every room look more harmonious and invite you to linger. If you want it to be cosy, the rule applies: the thicker the frame, the better! If it fits into the interior, you are welcome to use warm materials. Picture frames made of wood or fabric-wrapped frames radiate cosiness.

If you do not like picture frames, you can alternatively make a photo wall. To do this, hang (or glue) the selected photos very close together so that they look like wallpaper. Voilà, the bedroom radiates personality – and the photos may inspire the most beautiful dreams…

5. Plants

A flower says more than a thousand words – this could be the motto for a contemplative interior. Plants breathe life into every home and give the impression of peaceful nature.

Whether a chic bouquet of flowers (free from the motto: gifts for myself) in a ceramic vase or a green plant – whatever you like is allowed. The following plants are particularly suitable in the bedroom: the birch fig (filters pollutants), the delicately scented pink jasmine (makes for a more restful night), the easy-care aloe vera (releases oxygen), the lush golden fruit palm (humidifies the air) or the well-known real lavender (helps you fall asleep).

6. Blankets & pillows

There are some things in life you can’t get enough of. These include – apart from chocolate – clearly cuddly blankets! They are fluffy, cuddly, chubby – an absolute must-have for a cosy bedroom.

And where do you put the – preferably colourful – blankets? No question – wherever you want! On wide window sills, chairs, armchairs, on free shelves, on the bed itself: there are no limits to your imagination!

By the way: Pillows also serve this purpose. Covers made of wool, cotton or fleece create an optical warmth (silk and linen have a cooling effect).

7. The right light

Warm light lets us find peace and conveys comfort. Ideally, you should use lamps with fabric shades – whether on the ceiling, wall or bedside table.

Glaring neon light, on the other hand, must be left outside! Cold light is stimulating and has no place in the bedroom.

Tip: The wall colour also makes a big difference. Painting a wall with warm tones (e.g. with a natural tone such as honey, sand, caramel or ivory) makes the room much more cosy.

8. The right curtains

Curtains and drapes make a room more cosy when they reach from the ceiling to the floor. One feels safer, more hugged than with the short version.

The following applies to the fabrics: not so thick that they make the room look gloomy, but also not so thin that you can look into the room from outside.

The combination of curtains and drapes is an ideal way of letting light in or screening yourself off.

9. Fluffy carpet

The thicker the carpet is, the cozier it looks (and feels by the way, when you walk barefoot over it). If you have enough space, you can also combine different carpets, e.g. a flokati by the bed and a high-pile carpet in front of the wardrobe.

It is most practical to place the carpet next to the bed. Who wants to stand on cold ground first thing in the morning?

10. Filled corners

Empty corners appear cool and bare – they should be avoided if possible. The best way to achieve this is with a chic sculpture, a tall palm tree or a corner shelf.

A beautifully decorated corner is equally softer. Small corner shelves can be filled with personal mementos or family photos. Books turn every shelf into a little oasis of well-being.

11. A bench at the foot of the bed

If you do not want to place a headboard or shelf behind the bed (see point 3), you can also place a bench or chest at the foot of the bed. It rounds off the furnishings and can also be used as a storage surface.

Of course you can also decorate it with cushions or blankets – it will be an eye-catcher!

12. The right bed linen

Bed linen is not just bed linen. The materials can decide whether the whole room looks poor or icy.
For a comfortable bedroom, bed linen made of

  • Cotton
  • Beaver
  • Terrycloth
  • Flannel
  • Seersucker (suitable for the summer)

Percale, silk, satin and jersey on the other hand leave a cool impression.
If you don’t want to change your entire bed linen range, you can use bedspreads. As with bed linen: the more cheerful the colours, the better! Patterns also have an effect: checks, for example, have a very homely feel.

13. Fairy lights

In the Christmas season it gets nice and cozy in the apartments. Not entirely innocent in this are the fairy lights, which have long since stopped just decorating Christmas trees, but also shelves and walls.

The dim light of the small lamps creates a hygegic – and thoroughly romantic – atmosphere in the bedroom.

When choosing the colours, please make sure that the light is not too cool (see point 7).

14. A canopy bed

Haven’t we all dreamt of a canopy bed? It doesn’t have to be a luxury. With large sheets, old sheets or simple insect protection nets, a wonderful four-poster bed can be conjured up!

Tip: In combination with fairy lights, slightly transparent fabrics on the wall or ceiling are an absolute eye-catcher!

15. Colourful highlights

Whether a subtle coat of paint (such as a strip of paint on the wall), colourful curtains, gaudy decorative cushions or decorative boxes under the bed: nuances of colour not only decorate the bedroom, but also make it look more comfortable.

The advantage of large boxes or small boxes: they offer enough storage space for bits and pieces lying around!
