How to Clean Duvets and Eiderdowns

Even after washing our duvet should still be fluffy. You can find out here what you have to consider when you want to wash your duvet and eiderdowns.

How often should the duvet be washed?

The fine structure of the down creates a warmth cushion. As soon as the down becomes lumpy, the warming effect decreases. That is why we should fluff up and air our bedding every day.

In order for the down quilts to keep us warm for a long time, to counteract dust mites and to prevent the quilts from smelling unpleasant, we must wash them at regular intervals. Down duvets should be washed every two years and down pillows annually.

Washing machine yes or no?

As a rule, duvets can be washed in the washing machine, but the care label on the duvet should be observed. To avoid damaging the down in the washing machine, down duvets and down pillows should be separated from other textiles. The washing drum should also be large enough (between 5 and 7.5 kg capacity) and a tumble dryer is also essential for drying afterwards.

Washing program and detergent

  • To get the duvets hygienically clean and free of mites, they must be washed at 60 degrees.
  • Down duvets and down pillows must be washed with a gentle mild detergent, wool or down detergent. Heavy-duty detergent is too aggressive and should not be used.
  • You should also avoid using fabric softener, otherwise the feathers will stick together.
  • The fine or wool washing program should be selected here.
  • A brilliant tip to prevent sticking: we can put three tennis balls in the washing machine to loosen the down.
  • In general, the drum should not be overfilled. By the way, besides the blankets, you should not forget the mattresses.

Drying down

To keep the down fluffy and not sticky, it should not be dried in the fresh air or even in the sun. In addition, a down duvet takes forever to dry when we dry it on the clothes drying rack, and there is a high risk of germs and mould developing due to incorrect drying.

Therefore, blankets and pillows should be put in the dryer at 30 degrees. To ensure gentle drying, three to four dryer passes of 20 minutes each should be made.
