Make Your Own Magic Sand from 2 Ingredients

Magic sand is best suited for a homemade indoor sandbox. Here you can find out how to make magic sand yourself!

A sandpit is the hit for children: Here they can play and dig. Why don’t you set up an indoor sandbox for your kids so they can start digging right away at any time! You don’t even have to get a lot of things for it … just use a correspondingly large box and magic sand!

Making magic sand yourself: That’s how it’s done

To make magic sand yourself, you only need the following two ingredients:

  • Wheat flour
  • Oil (e.g. baby oil or rape seed oil)
  • As required: food colouring

Preparation

  1. The mixing ratio is 1 part oil and 8 parts flour. So if you want to use one cup as unit of measure, you need 1 cup of oil and 8 cups of flour.
  2. Put the quantities in a bowl and mix everything thoroughly until the oil has combined with the flour. If the magic sand is still a bit too fine for you, add another shot of oil – the sand is optimal when it sticks together well.
  3. Your children love colourful toys? Then just mix them coloured sand! Put some food colouring under the sand until it has a uniform colour.

Tip: Even if it is not real sand, it is best to put a coated blanket underneath to play … after all, the slightly crumbly flour should not be spread all over the apartment.

Durability: The sand will keep for a few days. Dispose of it as soon as it starts to smell.

Beautiful ideas with magic sand

Wonder sand is ideal for playing: it has a fine consistency, which makes it particularly good for laying motifs using moulds.

Magic sand is really good for playing “ice cream shop“.

If you don’t have extra moulds at hand, you can also use cookie cutters for the magic sand.
